Top 6 Things To Do in a New Library

Top 6 things to do in a new school library.

Well, it’s that time again. Not just time for school to start, but for some of us it means moving into a new school and a new library. I know this post is late for most people, so I’m writing it mostly so that I can remember next year what I did this year.

I walked into my new space for the first time two weeks ago. I have to say, it was a little daunting. It took me a two entire days just to clear the office of the previous librarian’s files, belongings, and equipment. The desk was broken and tiny, so I had to hunt for a new one. I am also the technology liaison on campus, which complicates things a bit. I have never worked here before, and I am not sure how everything worked before. I do know, however, that I need to make it work for me as well as the rest of the school.

This is what I have done or will be doing this week to get ready for the new year:
  1. Talk to the principal to find out her priorities. As any seasoned media specialist knows, there is so much to do that we need to set priorities. The work will never end, so prioritizing is a must.
  2. Talk to teachers, especially the language arts teachers to start with. What procedures were in place? How did they work? How can I help them this year? I may not get all of the answers right at the beginning, but I want to use it as a place to start.
  3. Getting technology ready to go for Monday, making sure teachers have what they need. This will take a lot of time.
  4. Find logins for circulation program, AR, and all of the other district websites that I need.
  5. Decide on library policies and write orientation. I can’t do this until I know the principal’s priorities, talk to teachers, and make sure their technology is ready for next week.
  6. Bulletin boards, displays, posters, come last. I took down the posters that had obviously faded and looked worn. I will put up more later, but just taking down some things that were past their prime seems to have freshened things up.

I have a lot of plans in the works. I want to redecorate, add 500 books to the collection, create a makerspace, and host some book clubs, but first things first. First I need to get through the first week.
